Eastern Massachusetts Peer Network

A world where anyone who wishes can access non-clinical peer support.

Eastern Massachusetts Peer Network is a professional organization of peer workers that will come together to discuss issues related to our work, so that we might gain professional sustenance and enrichment. We are entirely independent of funders or employers. We will unite with our sister organization, Western Mass Peer Network, to advocate for important issues related to our profession.

Peer specialists are individuals in recovery from emotional distress, trauma, or extreme life experience. They support other individuals’ well-being, as those individuals define it. We share our recovery stories and what helps us thrive. We create relationships that are founded on the principle of mutuality: genuine partnership, transparency, honesty, the absence of judgment, the absence of powering-over relationship dynamics, and deeply-rooted respect. We promote justice and fairness, and support individuals to learn what we have learned: how to advocate for ourselves. We support individuals in finding nurturing, healthy communities and support their advocating for participation in these, in ways that are meaningful and self-determined. We are involved in continuing education and share emerging knowledge about recovery with individuals we partner with, and within organizations in which we are employed.

A newly forming professional group during the RFI and RFR for the CBFS Model that began in 2009 in Massachusetts, Peer Specialists were not organized to respond to how we would like to see ourselves utilized in that model. Few in the state had truly meaningful information on what the new role should look like, or what Peer Specialists would be able bring to the table.

As a result, Peer Specialists across the state suffered. We spent years awkwardly, frequently despondently, searching for a definition of ourselves within CBFS. Those who supervised us experienced helplessness and confusion which is only now beginning to evaporate, and only in some agencies, and only on some teams. In this vacuum of information, we were often asked to perform tasks that directly contradicted our Code of Ethics. Almost universally across the state, Peer Specialists have also suffered financially, recurrently earning the lowest or second lowest full-time salaries among staff despite our lived expertise, certification, and specialized training.

We have grown up since 2009, and now embody a rich understanding of our professional roles as Peer Specialists. We daily witness the wisdom of our presence in our agencies, as more and more individuals, once dismissed as “unmotivated, hopeless, and unable to reach meaningful heights of recovery,” move into self-determined, dignified, and deeply fulfilling lives through partnering with peer support.

Peer Specialists, Peer Support Workers, and individuals with lived experience have come together to respond to the Request For Information (RFI) for the New Model across the state through the Western Mass and Eastern Mass Peer Networks. It will likely be another ten years before this opportunity will arise again.
